Writer, translator and broadcaster Robert Dessaix talks to Susan Wyndham about his book of memories, Chameleon, a personal history of what really matters in life – art, sex and death.

Robert Dessaix is best known as a writer of literary non-fiction, as embodied by his new book of memories, Chameleon, but he has also published two novels, several short stories and one play. His passions, as is evident in all his writing, are travel and language. Robert is the recipient of the 2022 Australia Council Award for Lifetime Achievement in Literature.

Susan Wyndham is a journalist, writer and former literary editor of The Sydney Morning Herald. She co-edited Hazzard and Harrower: The Letters with Brigitta Olubas. Her biography of Elizabeth Harrower will be published by NewSouth in 2025.
