What’s Next?

The Voice to Parliament referendum was an opportunity for meaningful Indigenous recognition. Thomas Mayo and Kerry O’Brien reflect on the defeat of this modest proposal. Are we mean-spirited? Are we naysayers who lack the empathy to redress profound wrongs? Did advocates fail to effectively prosecute their case? And what is the way forward?

Thomas Mayo is a Kaurareg Aboriginal and Kalkalgal, Erubamle Torres Strait Islander man. He lives on Larrakia land in Darwin and is the elected Assistant National Secretary of the Maritime Union of Australia. He has more than 20 years’ experience in leadership and advocacy, including the development of the Uluru Statement from the Heart in May 2017. Thomas has also authored seven books, including Always Was, Always Will Be, on creating a fairer Australia.

Kerry O’Brien is an Australian journalist based in Byron Bay. He is the former editor and host of The 7.30 Report and Four Corners on the ABC. Kerry has also been awarded six Walkley Awards during his career.
